The National stadium was raging with excitement of happy fans as the African Cup of Nations kicked off on Saturday. The opening ceremony showed real African flair, diversity and unity among fans. One of the most striking performances of the day came from Lira who kept the stadium vibrant despite the rainy weather.

Fans came all out looking beautiful in their colorful African soccer gears. “The vibe is just awesome,” expressed one of the fans.

Despite the competitive spirit of the tournament, Orange AFCON South Africa 2013 brought Africans together on a more personal level as was the case with Roy and Portia; a blended couple made up of a Cape Verde husband and a South African wife. “We are optimistic about both countries doing well,” they said.

The passion of soccer was motivated by the spirit of humanity that was set by the soccer fans. Even though former President, Nelson Mandela was not there to bless the opening ceremony, fans became inspired by the tall and energetic Madiba puppets that were displayed.

Considering the fact that the tournament was supposed to be hosted in Libya but moved to South Africa due to the civil war in that country; South Africa really did a good job organizing a tournament of this magnitude at such short notice. One of the fans who were very impressed with a transport system confirmed; “It did not take us time to get here, we got here on time and we are very happy”.

The match was concluded with a draw score of 0-0, which reflected the competitive spirit of the tournament as a whole, although the South African fans were disappointed they still have high expectations of the national team making it to the semi-finals.

The Cape Verde fans, whose teams qualified for the first time in the history of the country, were happy with the final score. The majority of fans recognized the Samsung brand, as the official sponsor of the tournament and showed appreciation for its association with Orange AFCON, South Africa 2013.

Samsung cheer gear really helped fans to vividly show their passion for the game. One of the fans message to the brand was; “keep being passionate about your brand!” The excitement of the opening game has set the bar for the rest of the tournament. Towards the upcoming games, the spirit of the tournament will keep hope alive and Africa united.
